Charlie and Myra jokingly
call themselves either “the old and fat” or “combined
age: 101”. Charlie started tandem surfing at the age
of 48, just 48 hours after meeting Myra in the water
5-1/2 years ago. Charlie spent most of his childhood
growing up in Hawaii and surfing, but spent 20 years
out of the water living in Utah. Myra had never surfed
until she was 35 years old. She single surfs goofy foot,
but tandems regular foot with Charlie. Their weight
spread was only 40lbs when they met. With all this,
they considered themselves the most unlikely couple
for tandem, much less for lifting overhead. Now 65lbs
apart, and aged 54 and 49, they surprise themselves
on a regular basis with what they have learned and are
continuing to learn, including overhead lifts. 
Charlie is a Massage Therapist, and Myra is an Architect
who makes her full time living as an artist. They have
competed in the World Championships, having finished
2ndin the Legends division. About this, Myra adds “yes,
but there were only 5 couples in that heat! (If we can’t
laugh at ourselves, who can we laugh at?”)
