PRESS RELEASE:
INTERNATIONAL
TANDEM SURFERS VIE FOR 6K PURSE
San Clemente, April 2008: Professional and amateur
tandem surfers from France, Hawaii, Peru, Florida, and California
are expected to complete in the fourth stop on the 2008 ITSA World
Tandem Tour (WTT) at the San Clemente Ocean Festival this July 19-20th.
The Tandem Waveriders Organization (TWO) is coordinating the event
and has invited the top tandem surfing talent from around the world.
Expected to attend is 2007 World Champion and World Tandem Tour
champion and all around waterman Kalani Vierra, who is competing
in this year’s circuit with his new tandem partner, his fifteen
year old daughter Ala. Currently ranked in first place on the 2008
WTT circuit, Rico Leroy and Sarah Burel of France will also be competing.
Of course, all of the California tandem teams will be there to display
their local knowledge of surfing the North side of the San Clemente
pier. With the event open to 18 professional and amateur teams and
6K in prize money at stake, it promises to be an exciting and awe-inspiring
exhibition of the best of tandem surfing.
Tandem surfing is an ancient Hawaiian tradition of surfing with
two people on the same board. Since the 1960’s, when the sport
enjoyed immense popularity, professional Tandem Surfing has evolved
from two people riding a wave together, into a spectacular exhibition
of difficult gymnastic-type lifts and stunts performed while surfing.
Historically practiced by small, but dedicated crews in isolate
pockets of the surfing culture, Tandem Surfing recently experience
a resurgence in participation and popularity when the International
Tandem Surfing Association was created in 2006 and was sanctioned
by the ISA, the second largest surfing association in the world.
Tandem Waveriders Organization (TWO), the California coalition of
tandem surfers, will be hosting, free to the public, exhibitions
and lift clinics on the beach during the festival to teach tandem
lifts and water safety to anyone interested in learning how to tandem
surf.
