Santa Cruz Longboard Union Surf Event
At the party Saturday night we were getting alittle worried...are
there enough teams to even compete? We start asking around... Danny
Cortazzo was out, Travis needed a partner
(any girls want to surf?) ... maybe some teams could borrow SUPs
& paddle out? I guess we had to wait for the morning... Due to the low turn out there was only a tandem final scheduled on Sunday, noon at Steamer's Lane. Competing for the first time was a local team that showed up that morning, Celia & Ben. Very cute couple who are stoked on tandem. Another local team, Destiny & Kirk, but no one has spotted them... Lew Mejia & Asia Carpenter borrow a SUP from Surftech and are in... the weight & male/female rule is thrown out to open it up to widen the field. It's Hana's 8th birthday & she wants to tandem the Lane with Dad. Its small & nice out...why not? Another team, Gigi & Joanne are paddling out... I'm content to take picutes on the rocks.

25, 2008 - What is normally one of the biggest tandem contests
of the year was but a small gathering of the most hard core surfers
this year. Due to the economy & rising gas prices, some clubs
did not venture up north to share in the good times SCLU always
delivers .... but the show did go on thanks to a dedicated crew
of 4 teams!
There
are not a lot of waves coming through, pickings are slim but all
you need is 2 with a 4 wave max. The yellow team (Gigi &
Joanne) make a valiant effort paddling for a couple waves
but its small and they are not on a proper board. Lew &
Asia get a few waves. One is a nice swan to reverse knee
stand combo. In pink is Ben & Celia who get 3 good waves...a
shoulder stand, a swan and a 2 arm back. They are so stoked! Also
all smiles is Hana. Her first wave is a 1 arm back falcon, next
a shoulder stand & just seconds before the horn i
s
blown Brian finds a sneaker left inside & Hana waves to the
crowd after coming down from a front attitude. What a show! People
were hooting from the cliffs rooting on the teams & again tandem
drew the biggest crowd. But how do you judge an event like that?
In fun factor everyone who competed won. The official results were
announced at the awards.
